Letters to Our Children – March

Dear Gracie,

You have been a little stressed out lately. Actually a lot stressed out. You are such a smart kid, which can be both a blessing and a curse. The blessing part is obvious but the curse of being such a smart kid means that you tend to overthink everything. You run every possible scenario through your head, which means that you consider and worry about every possible worst-case-scenario as well. I know this because I was the same way. Dad would read this letter and say to me “What? You still ARE the same way!”

You may look just like Dad but so many aspects of your personality are all me. So let me give you some advice. After spending most of my adolescence stressed out about things didn’t deserve the time I spent worrying about them, I can confidently tell you that you just need to lighten up. Everyone worries about certain things. It’s only natural. But when that worry keeps you up at night, makes your stomach sick, or makes you feel like bursting into tears, then it’s time to take a deep breath and relax. If you spend too much energy stressing out about what might happen, you miss out on the good things that are going on all around you. You have been practicing some relaxation techniques, one of which involves listening to the waves on your sound machine and visualizing yourself at the beach. I love that at age 10, you already understand and utilize these types of tools.

It sounds cliché to say, but these are really the best times of your life. Don’t forget to take the time to enjoy being 10, Baby. And if you have to spend some time at the beach to get through the day, so be it. Maybe sometimes I can join you there.

Karin - OH BOY – can I ever relate to this! In fact….I think I need to send myself to beach right now! LOL – really though, beginning from when I was in 1st grade, I would regularly make myself ill from worrying about various things…mostly tests…but my parents caught on to that pretty quick. Definitely the cursed part of being a smarty pants. The good news is – WE’RE STILL AWESOME 🙂

Tree - Love this! I’ve been trying to talk my girl through some things lately and to give perspective. It’s so difficult to watch them have to figure this stuff out the hard way. BTW, great window lighting : D

Lauren - I know I am a member of the Worry Club too! And yes we are still AWESOME! (Well said Karin!) I know for me that it is hard to just let things go. If it were logical, you would let it go, but worrying isn’t logical. Music helps me, both calm music and dance music. Jumping around and dancing is good to get the blood flowing. Gracie you are so loved by your parents, brother, family and us extended moms here. You’ll figure out what helps you too. Keep breathing!!

Stacy - Beautiful letter and photos Jess. I know all too much about the worry thing! Good advice, she needs to enjoy this time now and not spend it worrying, but of course that is easier said than done.

Jen Davis - I LOVE that you are in these with her. Something to truly treasure.
